We use top-quality products and don't cut corners on labor, because your home is a dream-come-true, a legacy, and an important investment. Your home will be protected against the elements and insects with layers of the perfect products chosen for your specific home. It will shine with the color and finish that reflects your preference and style.
We are proudly trained and recommended by two of the top log home stain providers, Sashco and Perma-Chink Systems. We truly love working with both of these high quality lines for timber frame home and log home finishing projects due to their advanced technology and excellent customer service. Using Perma-Chink or Sashco will make the most of your log home care and reduce upkeep to your home’s exterior over the life of the cabin.
Our knowledge of stain products and how they interact with different wood species, our experience with cabin styles, and our understanding of climate factors & invasive critters inform our recommendations and techniques.
Our care and precision make us successful.
Damage to your home’s logs, timbers and sealants can be brought about by insects, water, fire, and sun exposure. Rotted logs, mold, or insect damage can really put a damper on things by compromising the integrity of your home’s structure, beauty, and weatherproofing.
With a free site visit, The CabinSmiths will assess the log rot, insect, sun, or other damage and then provide you with an estimate for expert repair services including sanding or media blasting dark, sunburned facades; addressing infestations with fillers and insecticides; timber, log siding, post, partial- or full log replacement due to rot; re-chinking and re-caulking for closing air and water gaps; and more. We can also fix gauges and missing pieces of log ends using a special epoxy.
Once we’ve completed the timber and log restoration, preservatives and protectants will help keep things from getting damaged again. We may also recommend the addition of overhangs, gutters, flashing and splash guards where needed.
Let us bring your home back to robust condition with expert rot repair and more backed by both know-how and a concern for your safety and your investment.
Media blasting can transform your tired and ragged timbers to a fresh, new surface for re-staining. If your structure has a failing stain product, has not been well-maintained for years, or has paint that you'd like to remove in order to stain your logs, media blasting is the way to go.
What is it? Media blasting is a process of cleaning and preparing the surfaces of your home for refinishing. It involves propelling moderately abrasive materials at high speeds to remove previous coats of stain and paint, as well as other accumulated deposits. It evens out the "complexion" and surface of weathered logs, providing a fresh new base to stain.
We use only eco-friendly media such as super-fine crushed glass, with no negative affects to your home or landscaping. Blasting with corn cob or other organic substrates is not recommended due to the propensity for it to nestle into checks and cracks and thereby invite rot. Prior to applying borate, primer and stain, we always hand-sand any areas that were roughed up by the media a little too much.
Using a high-quality wood cleaner agent, dirt and grime are eradicated from the walls of your house so they are refreshed and primed for insect treatment, a new clear-coat, or whatever is next. In our power-washing technique, we are sensitive to the effects of "fuzzing", wherein the surface of the logs looks roughed up. We thoughtfully maintain a pressure that does the job without causing damage to your logs and timbers. Keep in mind that some roughness is good in order to help stain soak in and for caulk adhere better, but we will hand-sand areas that need it prior to re-staining or clear coating.
In preparation for re-staining or applying a new clear coat during restoration, our team carefully inspects every log for checks that can invite water damage over time, as well as spots where chinking has failed.
Checks are a natural characteristic of wood in log homes and do not indicate structural failure. However, upward-facing checks can collect water, increasing the interior moisture content of the log, which can eventually result in internal wood decay and provide nesting sites for carpenter ants and other insects. We carefully hand-apply high quality caulking to "trouble" checks, removing old caulking first where applicable. The caulks we use are chemically designed to flex with the movement of your home’s natural logs.
Love your Appalachian-style cabin? Depending on the construction of your log home, holes in chinking can obviously affect weatherproofing, allowing the elements (or bugs) to come inside. When we re-stain, we always search for, and patch, broken and missing chinking.
A re-stain can breathe new life into an old home. A new clear-coat alone can, as well, and our consultation with you will point to just what your special home most needs at the moment.
Once we've blasted or washed your cabin, caulked and filled in chinking where necessary, and applied insect treatment, our team will conscientiously tape off all windows, doors, outlets etc. and set to work applying high-grade products for your re-staining job. Whether your logs need primer, oil-based verses water based stain, one coat or two, and what clear coat is best, will depend on the condition of the home, the look you want to achieve, and the elemental conditions your home faces every day.
We apply all coats carefully using both brushes and sprayers, and we make sure that you are satisfied with the results.
We bring our experience to bat for you.
