Thomas Smith's love affair with log cabins began back when he built one alongside the director from his church camp. Thomas was 15 years of age, and the two of them fit together logs which had been harvested from the property to make a place where the director could retreat to write.
Thomas later got into sales for a major US company that designs and fabricates log cabin kits. In fact, he became the manager for the regional sales center in no time flat. His team was responsible for over $20 million in annual sales.
Built for movement and not satisfied with working behind a desk, Thomas struck out to get his hands into the construction side of things. He went to work for log home builders, where he felt much more comfortable in the fresh air and sunshine, traveling and learning the ins and outs of these very special homes and their construction. But there was still something missing. The jobs were long and kept him from seeing family for months at a time. The builds were dependent on so many subcontractors and outside factors that it detracted from the joy of building.
One season, the crew he normally built with took a log cabin maintenance job, and Thomas was hooked. They media blasted the log house, fought against exterior log mildew, UV rays and carpenter bees, and restored the home’s exterior with wood stain and sealant. He enjoyed the process so much that he decided to make it his full-time work. He was trained in the field by experts and has continued to grow with experience and product training intensives.
The CabinSmiths LLC was borne of the thrill of bringing joy to clients who adore their unique homes, and who want to see them finished, refinished, repaired, and restored to their original glory.

Products We Use
We are proudly trained and recommended by two of the top log home stain providers, Sashco and Perma-Chink Systems. We truly love working with both of these high quality lines for log and timber frame home restoration projects due to their advanced technology and excellent customer service. Using Perma-Chink Systems or Sashco will make the most of your log cabin maintenance service and reduce upkeep to your home’s exterior over the life of the cabin. However, we recognize that folks may have a different existing product on their home that they appreciate, and we are happy to work with nearly any product the timber frame or log home owner prefers.
Each cabin is unique. Because of this, we prefer to pay a site visit prior to providing an estimate, if possible. Our estimates are always free of charge.
If a log cabin or timber frame home has been well-maintained and has protective measures such as ideal overhangs, covered porches, gutters, and shade, we can simply provide an inspection, wash, and re-stain or reapplication of a top coat only, depending on the existing product. Should more extensive work be required (such as log rot repair, media blasting due to build up or breakdown of stain, or tackling carpenter bee, woodpecker, or termite damage), we are prepared to handle all of that as well. Landscaping, access, and existing product can all also affect the price of a project. A site visit will help us hone in on the best services for your home improvement estimate.
Our log home care services include new home finishing; media blasting, power washing, and sanding; log rot repair; repair and upkeep due to insect, water, or fire damage; applying insect deterrent such as borate, Drione, etc.; log wall and log siding surface restoration; re-staining, re-applying clear-coat inside and out; caulking and re-chinking; common log home maintenance, and more. We will leave you with the maintenance tips you need to care for your special home in between each CabinSmiths visit.
